Crested Butte, high on the west side of the Rockies was originally a mining town, settled in the 1880s. In the 50's when coal deposits were exhausted it has reinvented itself as a year-round resort town.
The Mt. Crested Butte Ski Resort offers a thousand acres of some of the most extreme skiing terrain in Colorado, Fourteen chairlifts, over 80 downhill runs and over 30 miles of groomed cross country trails. The resort is also a very popular summer recreation area attracting mountain bikers from all over the world.
The town of Crested Butte has one of the largest National Historic Districts in Colorado with numerous Victorian homes, shops, restaurants and other services. A complimentary shuttle service operated by the town runs between the Ski resort at Mt. Crested Butte and Crested Butte Victorian town, three miles apart.
Condos are the common accommodation option at Crested Butte, with a limited availability of hotel rooms on the mountain itself. Affordable hotels and motels can also be found 40 minutes down the mountain at the town of Gunnison.
