Located in the Ridge-and-valley Appalachians on the Banks of the North Branch of the Potomac River, Cumberland, MD is a lively town with Victorian history and almost 20,000 residents. It sits just north of the West Virginia state line.
Cumberland's historic downtown has a brick-paved pedestrian mall lined with dozens of shops, restaurants and sidewalk cafes and dotted with numerous historical buildings and sites. It is the focal point of the city for locals and tourists alike.
Major points of interest in the downtown area include the Western Maryland Railway Station, which is the starting point of a countryside trip onboard the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad with its 1916 Baldwin Steam Locomotive and the Canal Place Heritage Area at the western terminus of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal.
Hotels and motels in the Cumberland area are mainly located in the suburban community of La Vale, just west of town and in the nearby community of Frostburg, which is home to Frostburg State University. All area hotels put visitors within easy access of the I-68 and area attractions.
