The small river town of Galena is located at the northwestern corner of Illinois, about 15 miles southeast of Dubuque Iowa, along highway 20. It sits on the banks of the Galena River, about four miles of the Mississippi River.
Once a booming miners town and a port-of-call for steam boats, Galena was home of Ulysses S. Grant, the eighteenth President of the United States and eight other Union generals.
Attraction in the area include the Vinegar Hill Lead Mine and Museum and Daviess County History Museum.
Recreation activities in the area include hot air balloon flights, boating and fishing along the Galena and Mississippi Rivers in summer. Downhill and cross-country skiing in Chestnut Mountain Resort and Sundown Mountain Resort are available during the winter months.
