Hutchinson, a city of over 40,000 people, is located an hour northwest of Wichita. From its roots as a salt producing town in the late 19th century and early 20th century it has grown to become a modern thriving city.
Main tourist points of interest include the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, a museum located 650 feet below ground in what used to be a salt mine; Dillon Nature Center, which is home to hundreds of species of plants and thousand of species of wild birds and the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center, a Smithsonian-affiliated facility and one of the world's most comprehensive space museums.
Animal lovers will enjoy Hedricks Exotic Animal Farm, which is home to camels, giraffes, kangaroos, ostriches and zebras as well as the Hutchinson Zoo. Kids will enjoy the Salt City Splash Aquatic Center and Kansas Splashdown Indoor Water Park, both offer numerous pools and slides.
Hotels and motels in Hutchinson are mainly located on the eastern side of the city, between downtown and the airport. All hotels and motels offer easy access to area attractions and are within 5 miles of each other and of the Hutchinson Mall.
