The small college city of Lexington, VA sits in the Shenandoah Valley, about an hour northeast of Roanoke. It is at the southern junction of the I-64 and the I-81.
Lexington is home to the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), nicknamed the 'West Point of the South' and the oldest state military college in the US. Its campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is also home to Washington and Lee University (W&L), a private liberal arts college founded in the 18th century. Buildings on its campus are also on the National Historic Landmark list.
Other points of interest in Lexington include the Stonewall Jackson House, the George C. Marshall Museum located at VMI campus and the Lee Chapel at the W&L campus.
Hotels and motels in Lexington cater mainly to visitors of the academic institutions and to tourists. Most are located near the North Lee highway exit of the I-64, about 2 miles northeast of both campuses and the downtown area.
