The city of Lynchburg with a population of about 65,000 is located on the banks of the James River, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia. It is about 50 miles east of Roanoke.
Downtown points of interest include Amazement Square hands-on children's museum, the historic Court House built in 1855 and the Lynchburg Museum.
South of town is the 20-thousand-acre Smith Mountain Lake, which offers numerous recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing and golfing.
Most hotels and motels in Lynchburg are located in the southern part of town between downtown and the Lynchburg Regional Airport. All hotels are within two miles of Liberty University Campus and the Campus of Lynchburg College.
